Crystal Dickerson

Currently, I support the DoD's Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) as a Senior Executive Consultant. In this role, I am responsible for ensuring that the client's annual funding of $208M is committed and obligated in a timely fashion. I am also responsible for tracking expenditures and Temporary Duty, as well as developing budget processes to support the JAIC. Because the JAIC is a new program, it is vital that we develop processes that will allow the program to run smoothly and enable appropriate reporting to leadership.

What do you think makes Suntiva a great place to work? Why do you enjoy working for Suntiva?

From my interview with my manager to my first day at Suntiva, the new hire process was seamless and everyone was very welcoming. Of all the companies I have worked at, I never met with the President and CEO in a one-on-one setting. After that meeting, I knew I finally found the right company for me.

How are we making a difference in our client’s work?

After only being with Suntiva for six months, it is clear that Suntiva team members bring different areas of expertise together to reach the goals of every client.

What is your most impactful project with a client?

When I started in April 2019, only 16% of the FY2018 budget was obligated. As of 30 September, 99.97% was obligated. This is significant because the funds expired on 30 September 2019. Any money not obligated by that date was considered “dead money.” As JAIC is a new program, responsible execution of funding was crucial to aiding in its success and building organizational credibility.

What influenced or drove you to become an expert?

After getting out of the Air Force, my first job was as a budget analyst. My position in the Air Force was Information Manager, but I had an MBA and looked at this new position as a challenge. As with everything else I have done in my life, I decided to learn everything possible to be the best I could be for Suntiva. Throughout my career, I have worked on the Planning, Programming, Budget and Execution processes, which has enabled me to gain in-depth knowledge and become an expert in my field. However, I know that learning never ends and I continue to take classes to strengthen and grow my skills.

What drives or inspires you to work at Suntiva?

The values of the company drive me to work at Suntiva. From my first day at the company, the core values stood out, especially “do the right thing all the time” and “foster teamwork and collaboration.” In many companies, doing the right thing gets pushed aside to gain business. As an employee, I love leaving work knowing that my company will support me in doing the right thing. Being prior military, we never had a single-person mission it was always a team effort where we succeeded or failed together. It’s great to work in an environment where everyone works together as a team.
